Reflective writing 29/10/2021

I decided to develop the concept I had during the 3D, Product and Spatial Design day of a fish trapped in a prison of pollution (my wire ear hanging). I was inspired by terrariums to make a physical snapshot of the state of Lake Erie's dead zones. I used materials I found in the garden to create the lake bed and then coloured in the glass jar to create the effect of algae infested water. The two dead fish show how the algae use up all the oxygen in the water which causes the other creatures to die. I wanted the fish to be as close to the top of the jar as possible, as dead fish float, and considered solutions such as glueing them to the side of the jar before settling on suspending them with string. One fish was hanging vertically downward rather than the horizontal effect I wanted so I added more plasticine to the tail to even out the weight. I am happy with how the final jar product turned out, but would prefer to have done the background/hazard signs differently to make the piece as a whole more interesting. The intended effect of our piece as a group was education.
