Reflective writing on our algae-fighting water-filtration project

We made a model of a water filter that could be placed at the bottom of the lake and would filter out the nitrogen and other pollutants from the run off from farms and cities. The bamboo poles create the structure. The fabric and paper and masking tape represent the filters.

It was hard to think of a solution to an ecological problem that didn't require science way beyond our understanding or changes in policy. This task then became much more challenging by being asked to make the product out of large bamboo sticks. Working in a team definitely made this process easier and more manageable as the burden of work was shared amongst us and we could contribute different things.

We considered some kind of drainage system around the farmer's fields to catch the water run off and take it for treatment before being released back to the lake. We decided this wasn't practical to try to make using the materials we had available. Limited materials to hand definitely was a large part of the challenge.
